Join The Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation, Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation - Los Angeles, and Ride On Bike Shop Co-Op as we come together to celebrate the inspiring life of Bridget “Biddy” Mason on her 200th birthday. Born enslaved in Mississippi, Biddy walked to Los Angeles behind her master’s wagon, where she ultimately gained her freedom, worked as a nurse and midwife, and became the first black woman to own land in Los Angeles. As Biddy Mason’s wealth grew, so did her generosity. As a visionary philanthropist, she provided food and shelter for the poor, healed the sick, and visited inmates in county jail.
The Biddy Mason Memorial Park was established in 1988, on the same land where Biddy's first home was built. The park includes a mural of inscriptions, deeds and maps, and a timeline of Biddy's life.
