Do you know Biddy Mason?

Despite being born enslaved in Mississippi, Biddy pushed through adversity. She walked 1,700 miles to Southern California where she ultimately gained her freedom and was the first Black woman to own real estate. As we celebrate her 201st birthday, we are reminded that her story is timeless—a story about unwavering hope, love for community, and resistance.

Join us for a two-day celebration commemorating the life and legacy of Biddy Mason.

Day 1 - Wreath Laying Ceremony
Day 2 - Extended Walking Tour

Started by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) is a comprehensive, national and community-based process to plan for and bring about transformational and sustainable change, and to address the historic and contemporary effects of racism. TRHT seeks to unearth and jettison the deeply held, and often unconscious, beliefs created by racism – the main one being the belief in a “hierarchy of human value.”
